Do reviews decide what AI recommends?
Reviews are one of the signals AI assistants read, not the only one. Your facts still come first: an AI assistant has to find your name, phone and hours before your reviews help.

The answer
Reviews are one of the signals AI assistants read, not the only one. When an AI assistant recommends a local business it often sums up what reviewers say, such as "known for fast, friendly service", and recent, specific, honest reviews give it more to go on. Your facts still come first: an AI assistant has to find your name, phone and hours before your reviews help. Ask every happy customer, answer every review calmly, and never buy, trade for or filter reviews.
Key points
- AI assistants read reviews and often repeat their gist in one sentence.
- Recent and specific beats many and vague. "Fixed our furnace in Bigfork the same week" says more than five stars alone.
- Google reviews are the ones most read. Facebook, the review sites and trade sites count too.
- Ask at the moment the customer says thank you, with a direct link.
- Never buy reviews or reward good ones: it breaks platform rules, and under the FTC's 2024 rule it can bring federal penalties. Google also forbids asking only the happy customers.
How AI assistants use reviews
When someone asks an AI assistant for a good local business, it reads what it can find, including reviews, and tends to:
- Sum them up. "Customers mention quick response times and fair prices."
- Notice specifics. Services, towns and the kind of job reviewers mention.
- Notice recency. A business with reviews from this year reads as open and active.
- Notice patterns. One bad review among many good ones reads as normal; a run of the same complaint does not.
Where reviews count
- Google is read the most, by Google's own AI answers and by many others.
- Facebook recommendations matter for many rural businesses.
- Review sites matter more for restaurants, shops and personal services. Read each site's own rules before you ask: Yelp, for one, asks businesses not to request reviews, so there, let them come on their own.
- Trade sites matter for their trades: health directories for clinics, home-service sites for contractors.
You do not need to chase every site. Keep your Google reviews healthy and answer wherever customers leave them.
How to get more honest reviews
- Ask at the right moment: when the customer says thank you, the job is done and they are happy.
- Make it one tap: send a direct link to your Google review page by text or email.
- Ask everyone, not only the customers you expect to be happy.
- Ask them to mention the job and the town, if they are comfortable: "It helps other people in Whitefish know what we do."
- Put the link where people see it: on your receipts, invoices and website.
How to answer reviews
- Answer every one, good and bad, briefly.
- Thank people by the job, not with a copied line.
- For a bad review, stay calm and short. Acknowledge it, say what you will do, and offer to talk directly.
- Never share private details. If you are a health provider, never confirm in a reply that someone is a patient.
What never to do
- Buy reviews, or pay anyone to write them.
- Offer a discount or gift for a good review. Asking for an honest review is fine; paying for a good one is not.
- Ask only happy customers. Filtering who gets asked breaks Google's rules.
- Write reviews for yourself, or ask family and staff to.
In 2024 the Federal Trade Commission adopted a rule that lets it seek civil penalties for fake reviews and for rewards tied to a good review. It is no longer only a platform rule.

Where Validated.Directory fits
Validated.Directory shows no reviews and no stars. Your record is the facts you confirmed, with the date you stood behind them. It sits beside your reviews and gives AI assistants the facts; your reviews give them the reputation.
Questions
- Can I get a bad review removed?
- Only if it breaks the platform's rules, for example if it is fake, off-topic or abusive. Flag it through the platform. Otherwise, answer it calmly; a good reply often helps more than removal would.
- How many reviews do I need?
- There is no magic number. A steady trickle of recent, honest reviews does more than a burst of old ones.
- Should I pay for review software?
- You do not need to. A text with your Google review link does the job.
- Does Validated.Directory rate businesses?
- No. There are no reviews, ratings or rankings on Validated.Directory, and nobody can pay to be placed above anyone else.
