The answer
Ask the AI assistants your customers use the same questions your customers ask, and see what comes back. The easy way: fill in the form above with five facts about your business and your email, and we ask them for you and send you what they said. Or ask them yourself: five questions in four or five AI assistants takes about twenty minutes on your phone.
Key points
- The form above asks for five things: your business name, town, state, kind of business, and up to three towns you serve beyond your home base.
- To do it yourself, sign out, or use a private window, where you can.
- Ask five questions: what you do, your hours and phone, the question a new customer asks, your service area, and whether you are open.
- Write down whether you were named, whether the facts were right, who else was named, and the sources it shows.
- Run it again every month. The change is the point.
The five questions
Put your own business name, trade and towns in the brackets. Ask them word for word, one at a time, signed out or in a fresh chat with memory turned off.
- What you do: "What does [Business name] in [Town], [State] do?"
- Your basics: "What are the hours and phone number for [Business name] in [Town]?"
- The question a new customer asks: "Who is a good [your trade] near [Town], [State]?" This is the one that matters most. A new customer does not know your name yet.
- Your service area: "Who is a good [your trade] in [a town you serve but are not based in]?"
- Whether you are open: "Is [Business name] in [Town] still open?"
Ask the AI assistants your customers use: ChatGPT, Gemini (and the AI answer at the top of a Google search), Claude, Perplexity, Copilot, Grok and Meta AI, or the four or five most likely.
For every answer write down four things: named or not, facts right or wrong, who else was named, and where it says it got them. A grid works: questions down the side, AI assistants across the top.
How to read what you found
- Named, and right. Good. Write down where it got the facts, and keep those sources current.
- Named, but wrong. Find the source it used and fix it there. An old phone number almost always lives on a listing you forgot about. See when AI gets your business wrong.
- Not named at all. The AI assistant could not find enough facts to trust. Start with your own website and your free listings. See how AI picks a local business.
- A competitor named instead. Look at what they have that you do not: services written out, towns named, hours listed, recent reviews. That is your list.
- Named in your town, missing in the next town over. That is the chamber challenge: your service area is not written down anywhere an AI assistant reads.

Questions
- Why do different AI assistants give me different answers?
- Each one reads different sources and weighs them its own way. Google's lean on your Google Business Profile; Copilot leans on Bing; others read the open web. That is why your facts need to be right in several places, not just one.
- Why did the same AI assistant give a different answer the next day?
- AI answers are not fixed. Wording, recent reads and small changes in how the question is asked all move them. Ask the same question two or three times and look at the pattern, not one answer.
- Should I be signed in when I test?
- Signed out where you can, so you see what a stranger sees. Where an AI assistant needs an account, start a new chat with memory or personalization turned off.
- Is it bad if an AI assistant has never heard of my business?
- It is common, and it is fixable. It usually means your facts are not written down anywhere it reads, or not in words it can use.
- Can someone do this test for me?
- Yes. Fill in the form at the top of this page and we ask the questions for you, free, and send you what the AI assistants said by email.
